Cowichan Aquatic Centre, Duncan, British Columbia

The Cowichan Aquatic Centre, located on Vancouver Island between Nanaimo and Victoria, is situated beside the existing Cowichan Centre, and was built to replace the aging Aquannis Pool that was no longer meeting the needs and desires of the community for aquatic options and was deemed to be beyond its useful service life.

Opened in August 2008 in time to host one of the venues for the 2008 Indigenous Games, the Cowichan Aquatic Centre is a truly modern facility that reflects the rich history and culture of the Cowichan Valley. With an extensive fitness and wellness centre, multi-purpose spaces for yoga, meetings, parties, and other events, as well as childminding and retail space this facility provides something for everyone. The 25m lap pool will offer fitness and competition swimming while the large wave/leisure pool offers fun, relaxation, and aqua-therapy opportunities.

To offset the cost of construction, a two-tier payment system charges a different usage rate to those who pay toward facility costs through property taxes, versus those who do not contribute toward the facility capital, operational, and debt costs.

Residents or members of those local government areas who contribute will be able to receive an Access Card at no cost and register for programs. Residents of local government areas who do not contribute will have the option of either paying higher admission fees or paying for an Access Card, granting them access to discounted admission fees and giving them the opportunity to register for programs.
