Revelstoke Aquatic Centre, Revelstoke, British Columbia

The Revelstoke area has lots to offer it's residents. Beautiful views, wide open spaces, an abundance of untouched nature and wildlife, and now it has a spectacular new aquatic centre. How well was the new Revelstoke Aquatic Centre received when it opened in March 2005? It took in more than three times the expected revenue in the first three weeks of operation. "We've had an absolutely fantastic response" said Alan Chell, Director of Parks and Recreation, "the variety of features in the pool ensures there is something of interest for everyone and has also served as a means for dispersing the crowd throughout the pool.". Registration for monthly and yearly passes, swim classes, master swim programs, and bookings for parties have all had a very high response.

The Revelstoke Aquatic facility is a prime example of the VDA approach to simplify the exteriors and minimize that cost so as to maximize the facility inside. The adjacent existing community centre was gutted and converted into the change areas, swirl pool, and fitness area for the new aquatic centre. The design teams approach and attention to detail ensured that the new building joined seamlessly to the existing. Expansive windows run the length of the pool hall and makes the amazing natural setting an integral part of the interior decor.

One of the many "green" design features of the facility is the use of heat supplied by the City owned Revelstoke Community Energy Corporation, that uses wood waste to provide hot-water heat.

This 1,642 square metre multi-purpose indoor aquatic facility with its 25 meter lap pool, free-form leisure pool, water slide, swirl pool, sauna, lazy river, spray arches, climbing wall, and tots pool provide not only play value for children (of all ages), but also therapeutic benefits to all users. This pool won't only be used by those looking for physical exercise, but also by those looking for relaxation and for an opportunity to ease both their body and their mind.
