Aspen Recreation Center
Aspen, Colorado, USA
This facility opened in April 2003 and includes an NHL sized ice
arena, climbing wall, indoor competition pool and recreation/leisure
pool, youth centre, and future outdoor leisure pool. The "ARC"
as it is called, is a recreation park complex, connected to the
public school campus, nestled in-between two ski areas and the famous
14,000 foot tall Maroon Bells Mountains.
In
2000, Aspen and Pitkin County launched the Renewable Energy Mitigation
Program (REMP). Designed to promote renewable energy and energy
efficiency, REMP is the first program of its kind in the world.
By requiring new construction to mitigate their environmental impacts,
REMP has raised $2 million for energy efficiency and renewable energy
projects. REMP funds are being used to enhance the energy efficiency
of Aspen's new pool and rink complex. The facility includes efficient
boilers, pumps, motors, and fans, as well as a solar hot water system
and micro-turbine to make electricity.
This recreation centre is a spectacular addition to a community
known for providing its residents with outstanding leisure and recreational
opportunities.
