Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center
Bainbridge Island, Washington State, USA
The
Bainbridge Island Aquatics Center consists of two pools. The Ray
Williams pool, built in 1970 as an outdoor facility with a roof
added in 1977, was enlarged as part of the renovations to the facility.
The existing pool tank was increased from a 25 yard pool to a 25
metre pool and a "family pool" (the Don Nakata Memorial
Pool) was added as part of the renovations that began with a feasibility
study presented by Vic Davies Architect Ltd. working in conjunction
with the ORB Organization of Washington State. The extension of
the lap pool allows for FINA regulated events to be held at this
facility.
The
leisure pool, or family pool as it is known in the US, expands the
usage of the facility beyond the serious or competitive swimmer.
This pool is maintained at a temperature of 30°C or 85°F
and includes a dive tank area with 1m and 3m diving boards, four
lanes for lap swimming, lazy river, and various water moving devices.
The 180 foot water slide has it's own landing pool for safety reasons
and so that space in the other pool tanks is not tied up as a landing
area.
In addition to the enjoyment and play value of this free form pool,
there are many features that have therapeutic benefits. The ramped
entry allows those with impaired mobility to easily enter the water.
The water while warm is not as warm as that of the swirl pool or
bubble pool
and the current in the lazy river and water jets provide physiotherapy
opportunities for message and resistance training.
The renovations to this facility have created a true family recreation
centre, that will provide many years of service to the community
of Bainbridge Island.
