This ambitious multi-purpose facility brought together a powerful team to undertake this Design Build Operate project. The team on this project has built a formidable reputation by providing clients with innovative and practical cost conscious results. VDA has more experience in the specialized field of recreational facilities than any other consultant in Canada and this know-how clearly shows in Cranbrook's new and highly acclaimed "Rec Plex".

While it may be the innovative, exciting leisure pool which remains the main feature in a recreation complex, the inclusion of other amenities compliment in may ways and add to the profitability of facilities. Snack bars, viewing terraces, fitness centres, aerobic studios, and child minding facilities, all serve to make this recreation complex a true community centre. Other popular additions include physiotherapy clinics and retail outlets. The combination of an ice arena and swimming pool in this complex has proven to be both financially successful and popular with the users.

The NHL size ice hockey arena in the Cranbrook Rec Plex seats 4,500 for games and 6,000 for concert type events. The grand opening of the facility included a sold out benefit concert by Bryan Adams. The 18 luxurious private boxes were sold long before construction was complete and the double-size press box ensures quality coverage of any games or events. The arena is state-of-the-art and was part of the deal that brought the popular Kootenay Ice Hockey team to town. However, this versatile facility will host more that hockey games. The building will be home to rodeo events, trade shows, and entertainment events of every kind.

It gets cold in Cranbrook and the designers of this project have made a great space where the whole family can spend the day.
