Beban Park Pool Expansion
Nanaimo, British Columbia

As communities grow and change the recreational requirements of the residents also change. Even with new and exciting program elements being added, facilities slowly lose favour with users through boredom or overuse. This does not mean a structurally sound facility in a good location needs to be torn down or abandoned. There are endless ways to rejuvenate an aging aquatic facility. This project is an excellent example of a community's ability to breathe new life into their existing recreation centre.

“Wow!” is the first word spoken by most people when viewing the recent changes at Beban Park Pool. The expansion was more than just a make-over; almost everywhere things are bigger, brighter, and better. The addition of a leisure pool was one of a number of features added as part of an overall upgrading of the facilities at Beban Park.

Swimmers of all ages will be drawn to the new leisure pool decorated in a “Pirates of the CariBeban” theme. The decor was carried through into the existing lap pool hall, making for a seamless connection between new and old. The new 10 metre (30 foot) long waterslide loops its way down the outside the building and then re-enters to finish in the shutdown lane running parallel to the leisure pool. Offering endless play opportunities, a three storey water feature in the form of a pirate ship sits in the shallow end of the pool ready to take swimmers on untold imaginary voyages. Features such as the vortex, lazy river, and bubble pit not only afford a chance to play, but also provide therapeutic benefits.

Other changes to the building include an inviting new entrance, easy access from a re-designed passenger drop-off zone, new concession, larger family change rooms, addition of an ozone water treatment system, renovation and redecoration of the existing sauna, and general upgrading of the mechanics of the facility.

The staff at Beban Park are expecting to be “overwhelmed” by visitors wanting a chance to use this newly expanded facility.
