Prince George Aquatic Centre
Prince George, British Columbia

On Friday, December
18th 1998 the doors of the aquatic centre in Prince George opened.
This facility, with its 8 lane 52 metre competition pool, will permit
the City to train for and host competitive swims as well as dive
competitions using the 5, 7.5 and 10 metre dive tower. The 2 movable
bulkheads will allow up to 3 different events to be held at one
time. The new Prince George Aquatic Centre is one of Canadas
premiere facilities and will attract national and international
attention.
In addition
to the competitive value of this facility, the pool was designed
to offer non-competitive swimmers and families a wide variety of
leisure activities. A wave machine, which can generate 1 metre high
waves, brings the ocean to Prince George with waves crashing
into the curved breakwater and splashing over the top. Excitement
abounds, shrieks are inevitable, enjoyment is guaranteed
whatever age one might be.
Swimmers
can float down the 28 metre long lazy river or walk against the
current for the therapeutic or cardiovascular benefit. Water moving
devices, such as water cannons, sprays and the perpetually dumping
cones of water of the Tumble Bucket, are popular in the leisure
pool.
This facility
was designed for use by every member of the community. The 20 person
swirlpool is barrier free and is accessible to anyone, even those
in wheelchairs. A ramped access into the leisure pool allows swimmers
to walk directly into the pool.
The forestry
decor, with its life-size spruce trees and 2,400 square foot mural
depicting the landscape around Prince George, blends seamlessly
into the panoramic view from the window adjacent to the leisure
pool.
