City Centre Aquatic Complex
Coquitlam, British Columbia

Serving a catchment area of approximately 180,000 (in 1994), City Centre Aquatic Complex opened its doors in March 1994, at a construction cost of $8.2 million. With an average daily usage of 1,200 visits, this facility can boasted an 84% recovery rate for 1997. The decor, with its Florida Keys theme, has created a facility that is a true tropical paradise with palm trees and pelicans, hanging silk buntings and dramatic hand painted murals. Space, light, and colour combine and contribute to an atmosphere of fun and relaxation.

The 8 lane 50 metre competition pool is complete with a movable pool floor, the first in British Columbia. The ability to raise and lower the pool floor to any desired depth within the 2 metre deep tank makes the 50 metre pool suitable for any number of activities and events – from aquafit and swim classes to FINA sanctioned competitions. Two movable bulkheads allow lane swimming at a variety of distances, and programmable multipurpose use of the 50 metre tank.

The tropical lagoon (leisure pool), in addition to wave making capabilities, includes a waterslide that loops outside the building, a raindrop unit, watersprays, rapids channel, bubble machine, swirlpool, sauna, and steam room. Additional services include a poolside café and viewing terrace, weight training and fitness rooms, multi-purpose rooms, physiotherapy clinic, childminding, and family changing area. Both the leisure and 50 metre pools use ozone for secondary water purification.

In this facility the design team brought a glimpse of the Florida Keys to British Columbia and offered unmatched recreational opportunities to serious and leisure users of all ages.
