Taber Leisure Pool
Taber, Alberta

Vic Davies Architect Ltd. provided pool consultant services to Hutchinson Barrett Architects of Calgary, Alberta, for the design of this facility in Taber, Alberta.

Constructed in 1991 at a cost of $2.5 million this aquatic facility, with its simple yet elegant design, contains a 25 metre 5 lane lap pool, a freeform leisure pool, swirlpool, and sauna.

The leisure pool provides water moving devices including a bubble pit, river rapids, rubber rock, sprays, and raindrop unit. Easy access to the leisure pool is provided both by a ladder and by a long sloping ramp. The freeform shape of the pool offers an appealing variety of swim and play spaces.

The tots’ pool is tucked in the shallow end of the leisure pool. A weir permits water to flow from the tots’ pool into the leisure pool, allowing for only one filtration system.

The use of natural light and a high open ceiling structure give the impression of greater size. The open floor plan of the aquatic centre means that the café, viewing terrace, lobby, and reception area actually form part of the pool hall. This not only expands the space but allows for more control and supervision of the pool area.

The decor includes suspended circular acoustic baffles, wall murals depicting an impressionistic horizon, palm trees, and faux rocks.
