Bulkley Valley Regional Pool
Smithers, British Columbia
The new Bulkley
Valley Regional Pool opened its doors in 1990. Serving the small
northern town of Smithers, with a population 6,500, this elegant
facility became a focal point of the community. The attendance for
1997 was 75,000.
Shallower
water is the keynote feature of the leisure pool. About three-quarters
of this pool is accessible for wading, which creates greater safety,
comfort, and enjoyment for the majority of patrons while the adjoining
lap pool allows lane swimming.
The natural
light and high ceiling provide and excellent foundation for the
interior decor. The use of plant material, rock work, and murals
soften the angles of the structure and provide an enjoyable and
relaxing surrounding for swimmers.
Through the use of a freeform shape and by creating islands
from the building supports in the shallow leisure pool, it was possible
to provide interesting and varied play areas and incorporate numerous
water moving features.
