Maple Ridge Leisure Centre
Maple Ridge, British Columbia
Opened to the
public in October 1981, this facility has provided a model for the
building of other centres and in completing renovations to existing
facilities both within as well as outside British Columbia. Through
careful project design and control, the centre was constructed on
time and within budget. The Centre is a public facility comprised
of a leisure pool, instructional pool, swirlpool, sauna, solarium,
fitness testing and exercise centre, racquetball and squash courts,
youth centre, and restaurant.
The
Leisure Centre was designed as an integral part of the downtown
redevelopment scheme and has provided a focal point for Maple Ridge.
In the summer
of 1983 the Municipality hosted the British Columbia Summer Games.
Spectators and athletes alike provided many positive comments concerning
this complex.
Unique design
and operating concepts have contributed to the overall quality of
this facility. The use of glass to make the best possible use of
natural light and the tropical atmosphere and waterfall, as well
as the solarium, are obvious features today but were bold innovations
when the complex was designed.
A centre island
design for the swirlpool adds wall space thereby maximizing total
capacity for use without increasing water volume.
Another innovative
design is a removable bridge unit that is used to separate the tots
pool from the deeper water of the larger leisure pool, allowing
only one filtration system.
